At the end of last year, we conducted an "Animal Survey." We asked participants which animal they would like to see on clothing. The top choice was the shoebill, known as the "motionless bird." While researching where to see real shoebills in order to create the design, we discovered that they can be found at Kobe Animal Kingdom, located near FELISSIMO. We asked them to help us supervise the design, and they gladly agreed. At the Animal Kingdom, you can observe many rare animals up close, including the Pallas's cat, another popular choice in the survey, and the ring-tailed lemur, featured in the summer collection. They are particularly committed to breeding shoebills, and welcomed two new birds into their home in May. Our first visit to Kobe Animal Kingdom was in early February. We were able to observe the male Bongo and the female Marimba. We decided to use these two popular birds at Animal Kingdom as a motif to create a shirt that can be worn throughout the season. First, we had a zookeeper check our design of the two birds. We made repeated revisions right up to the very last minute, with the help of zookeepers who pointed out the characteristics of the two birds that only they could tell, such as the length of their legs, the balance between their head and body, the length of their tail feathers and crest, and the pattern on their beaks. The finished design features alternating bongos and marimbas, but if you look closely, you can see that their faces move slightly, like stop-motion animation. We also made sure that the front of the shirt shows the shoebill from the front, and the back shows it from behind!
