During the Edo period, painter Kuwagata Keisai was said to have shared the same popularity as Katsushika Hokusai. This key pouch features a quail that appears in his illustrated manual, Choju Ryakugashiki. The cuteness of the quail depicted in Keisai's drawing is faithfully reproduced, from its round body to its striped pattern and its little pointed beak. The three birds, each posing in front, side, and back, are cleverly working hard to take turns holding the keys.
