It looks like candy konpeito, but it's not candy konpeito. "Ukihoshi" is a cute traditional Niigata sweet made from "arare" (rice crackers) covered in syrup. You can eat it as is, but we recommend adding it to a drink. The stars float in the drink...that's why it's called "Ukihoshi."

The inside is made of rice crackers, so it has a crunchy texture. It is also recommended as a topping for yogurt or ice cream. It can also be mixed with cereal or corn flakes.
You can either put the floating stars in first and then pour in the drink, or you can add them later. At first, they sink, but after a few seconds the sugar around them starts to dissolve and the lighter hail begins to float up. It's so cute that you'll find yourself saying "Wow!" out loud.
"Ukihoshi" is made by artisans using traditional methods, one color at a time, in a large pot, over the course of several hours, with great care and attention to detail. It is a sweet filled with everyone's love.
