Trying tufting! / Hejin unnie's cheerful report from Korea

Annyeonghaseyo! This is Hyejin unnie. With the streets of Korea regaining their vibrancy, in-person workshops are starting to be held here and there, so this month I'll be reporting on the workshops I've attended.

Tufting is the name of a rug-making method that involves using a special tufting gun to weave threads into fabric. Tufting classes have recently started opening up all over Korea, so I immediately signed up.

I found a tufting studio on social media where you can make things like keyrings and tissue cases, but this time I chose a mini mirror. It's a technique similar to punch needle tufting, and at first I was a little surprised by the "bang bang bang bang!" sound when the gun is used.

But I quickly got used to it, and in the end, I felt a refreshing sense of relief. Because I could create without worrying about the details, even someone as clumsy as me was very satisfied with the finished product. I completed a mirror with a really cute color scheme.

Tufting process

Tufting is done using the following steps:

① Draw the design on the fabric. The center is the final design, and the surrounding areas are practice. ② First, practice using the dye gun to get your hands used to it. It's surprisingly difficult.

③ Choosing your favorite color of thread is fun. ④ Use the thread gun to fill in the fabric like a coloring book.

⑤ Once you've finished hammering, use clippers and scissors to trim the threads to make them even in height and shape. ⑥ Finish by attaching a piece of fabric of your choice to the back.

⑦ A fluffy, soft, and cute mirror is finished. It took 3 hours.
