We interviewed RUKO, a felt artist whose creations are praised for being so realistic and delicious-looking, about what inspired her to start making felt sweets and what she finds so appealing about it. This will be a three-part series.
I still remember how shocking our first encounter was!

RUKO's encounter with felt sweets began with a page in a book. She was so impressed by the picture of a felt cake for pretend play that she thought, "I want to make one!" RUKO's child is a son, and she had given up on the idea of making any pretend play toys for him, but then she happened to see a friend of hers making some, and she helped out, which is how it all started.
Maintaining a spirit of inquiry will make your work shine even brighter.

RUKO started making felt sweets. She learned the very basics, "strawberries" and "piped cream," from a friend. After that, she spent her days experimenting and trying different techniques to create three-dimensional objects from flat felt, imagining the real thing. That process continues to this day.
To find your own handmade style

She says that about a year after starting her activities, she went through a period of thinking about her style. She was very conflicted about whether to create cute, stylized pieces for pretend play or to pursue realism. After much deliberation, she realized that she enjoyed pursuing realism, and that's how she ended up with her current felt sweets style.
When you're unsure, trust what you truly want to do.

By realistically conveying the deliciousness of sweets through felt creations, RUKO has created an original expression that is not an imitation of anyone else's work. According to RUKO, she was able to find her own unique style of art by "finding the form that she wanted to express herself."
I want to be more ambitious and become even better.

RUKO says that once she decided on the direction she wanted to go, her desire to create something more realistic, more delicious, and more beautiful was unstoppable. "Perhaps the continuous process of trial and error is the secret to longevity," she added.
